Acrylic Humidors Buyer’s Guide
An acrylic humidor can be a great low-maintenance storage solution for premium cigars. They are the modern alternative to the best cigar humidors that many cigar smokers are familiar with, and they’re much flashier than their wooden counterparts.
Unfortunately, you won’t find many of these models on the market since wooden humidors are more popular. However, thanks to some of the best humidor brands, I’m confident that you’ll soon notice a trend, as more and more bigger players in the industry release their own special acrylic models.
Some types of humidors are also made out of glass, however, many have found these humidors to be too heavy and fragile, making acrylic a much better alternative.
Benefits of Acrylic Humidors
While some experienced cigar enthusiasts can argue that wood is a much better choice for cigar storage, acrylic models offer many benefits, such as:
- Acrylic is much lighter than wood and glass
- Glass humidors are also a popular option and are often chosen because of their more elegant design, however, models that are made out of this material are much heavier and more fragile.
- Acrylic is very durable. Additionally, acrylic contains additives that will prevent degradation when exposed to UV light. This means it has significantly better UV absorbing properties.
- Not only are acrylic models very decorative, but they are also available in a variety of sizes, styles, and shapes.
- These storage devices will provide an airtight seal. Acrylic consists of a non-porous material that will not absorb moisture, so you will not have to season the humidor prior to using it like you do with wooden models.
- These humidors are much lighter compared to other cigar storage solutions.
- Acrylic is very durable. Plastic will turn yellow as it ages and will become brittle, cracking over time. Acrylic is a type of material that’s very hard-wearing.
- This material is also transparent. This will make it easier for you to check the hygrometer’s settings without opening the humidor and disturbing the perfect balance of the micro-climate inside.
- Because of the lightweight design, these models are also highly portable and can be a better option to use when you’re flying or planning a road trip.
Other Important Features
As you can see, this type of humidor offers many benefits that a standard wooden humidor doesn’t. Now, I’ll go over the important features to look for that can help you choose a great model for your cigar collection.
Design: Jars and Boxes
Many of these humidors will come in either a jar design or a box design that’s similar to a traditional wooden humidor. The jar models are made to hold a smaller number of cigars, while the larger box style humidors can hold anywhere from twenty cigars up to three hundred. The jar humidors feature a unique design, with the humidifier usually installed under the lid. Most types of jar style models will feature a clasp and rubber gasket design that provides an excellent airtight seal, although they may need to be replaced more often than a traditional humidor since the rubber gasket tends to wear out rather quickly, especially if you open your humidor often. The biggest benefit of this type of humidor is that it’s highly portable and durable, so it can be a great option if you’re searching for a humidor for vacation or car use. They’re also the most affordable option, so they’re a great choice for the cigar enthusiast on a budget. If you’re new to cigar collecting, it can also be a great choice, due to the low cigar capacity.
Some of the smaller capacity boxes are designed to be disposable. Many manufacturers will guarantee these boxes for a determined period of time, such as six to twelve months before they should be tossed out and replaced. These small boxes are often priced affordably and don’t require any maintenance. Larger models will have a lifespan similar to that of a traditional wooden humidor and can last for years with proper care. Often, these models are still priced more affordably compared to wooden humidors.
Airtight Seal
With any type of humidor, the seal is everything. A truly airtight seal will keep your cigars smelling and tasting fresh. The quality of the seal will depend heavily on how well the opening closes. Look for a model that features a magnetic locking system, which makes a humidor easy to open and provides an excellent seal. Most models will come equipped with a mechanical or rubber seal, both of which can work well, but a magnetic locking system is by far the best option. If the humidor has a low-quality seal it will be difficult to adjust the humidity.
Chemical Smell
One issue you may encounter with lower priced humidors made out of acrylic is the chemical smell. This is a common problem, but one you can easily resolve by allowing the humidor to remain open to air out for a period of twenty-four hours, after which point the smell will dissipate.
UV Absorption
Many people turn to acrylic humidors because of the material’s ability to absorb UV light. This will allow you to take a peek at the hygrometer and ensure the micro-climate is on point, all without opening the lid. While these humidors have a reputation for their ability to block harmful UV rays, they are not able to filter it out entirely. Because of this, you should still avoid placing the humidor in direct sunlight. Sunlight can potentially discolor your cigars and can cause a greenhouse effect in which the interior will heat up. The humidor can also be susceptible to fluctuating humidity levels since some lower quality acrylic humidors do not have the best insulation. If a model that struggles to maintain the right humidity level is placed in direct sunlight, it can have an impact on the scent and flavor of the cigar.
Durability
A high-quality humidor should have joints that are properly fused or well-glued if a particular model is made out of several parts. If the humidor has been injection molded, then weak joints will not be a concern. However, a model that has weak points may have gaps in the design that can allow moisture to escape, so paying close attention to the quality of the design and the humidor’s durability will be important.
Types of Acrylic
Thick, high quality acrylic will ensure that the humidor is durable and able to maintain the correct micro-climate. Unfortunately, not all acrylic is created equal.
Continuous Cast
This type of acrylic is weak and cheap. It contains impurities and is softer and often found on low-priced models. It also has a tendency to scratch and can easily crack if dropped.
Cell Cast
Cell cast acrylic is used in high-priced humidors and is much clearer and thicker than continuous cast acrylic.
If you’re not sure what type of acrylic the humidor is made out of, look at the weight and read reviews regarding durability. High-quality acrylic will be heavier than continuous cast.
Maintenance
Unlike a wooden humidor, an acrylic model is much easier to maintain. However, as I mentioned earlier, some models will have a strong chemical smell, right out of the box. Fortunately, this is an easy fix and simply requires you to leave the humidor out and wide open until the smell has dissipated. This should take no more than a few hours, but many experts recommend allowing the humidor to air out for a period of twenty-four hours.
Another possible problem is over-humidification. Because many of the leading models are airtight, it can be easy to over-humidify the interior. This means you will need to be extra careful with the type of humidifier you use. Most humidifiers will come with a basic one-way humidification system. These types of humidifiers will continue to release moisture, even when the humidor has achieved the perfect RH level. A two-way humidification system will cease to release moisture once the humidor’s humidity level has reached the ideal level. Two-way systems also work to absorb any excess moisture, which makes them a perfect choice for a model made out of acrylic.
Using humidifier packs, such as Boveda humidity packs, can be a great choice since they don’t need to be recharged and are self-maintaining. They also offer two-way humidity control. These packs will take up very little space, so they are also a great choice for a smaller humidor.
Price
The cost of an acrylic humidor will depend on the type of acrylic used, the size and cigar capacity, and the type of accessories included. High-priced models are designed to hold one to three hundred cigars, whereas small, portable models can hold ten to thirty cigars. Obviously, the serious cigar collector will want to go bigger, but they should also expect to pay a higher price.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a low-maintenance solution and an alternative to a standard wooden humidor, then an acrylic model is the perfect choice, although you’ll find that the selection is pretty limited compared to wooden humidors.
The best acrylic cigar humidor will be made out of cell cast acrylic and will come with an airtight seal that will make it much easier for the humidor to maintain the perfect micro-climate. The models that I’ve included here in my guide each earned top marks for their overall quality, top-notch construction, seal design, and their durability.
I hope this guide and my product recommendations has helped you choose a model that will work perfectly for your cigar collection, future smoking needs, and your budget. As always…Happy Puffing!
